Mark of the Wild is a Chrome extension that stamps a shared prefix onto Steam Community nicknames so a Rust group can find each other in-game. It is not affiliated with Valve, Steam, Facepunch, or Blizzard.
We do not run a backend
The extension does not send your lists, SteamIDs, nicknames, or settings to us. There is no Mark of the Wild server, analytics pipeline, advertising SDK, or crash reporter.
What stays on your computer
Lists you create are saved in Chrome’s local extension storage on this device only
(chrome.storage.local). That can include:
- List names, colors, and prefixes
- SteamID64s you add, plus optional custom names
- Steam persona names and avatar URLs resolved from Steam Community
- Settings such as request delay and prefix-shuffle options
Uninstalling the extension removes this local data.
Steam Community session
To know whether you are signed in, the extension reads the steamLoginSecure and
sessionid cookies for steamcommunity.com in this Chrome profile.
It uses them only to detect your SteamID and to let Steam’s own nickname request run in your session.
Cookie values are not copied into extension storage and are not sent to any third party.
Network requests
The only host the extension talks to is https://steamcommunity.com. Typical requests:
- Set or clear a nickname with Steam’s
ajaxsetnicknamecall - Resolve profile URLs and look up public persona names / avatars
- Show a small add/remove control on the Steam friends page
Those requests use your existing Steam Community login. We do not proxy them.
What we do not do
- No account to sign up with us
- No selling or renting of data
- No use of data for credit, lending, or advertising
- No tracking across other websites
Children
The extension is intended for people who already use Steam Community and Rust. It is not directed at children.
